Digital fabrication accelerates college construction on Amager

The college UMEUS Amager is located between Amager Fælled and the pulsating life on Amagerbro, right next to the IT University and the University of Copenhagen’s Southern Campus. It contains modern studio apartments at affordable prices and consists of no less than 337 rooms with shared facilities.

The Dutch construction company Byldis was chosen for the task due to a total concept based on the use of integrated frames, windows, and sandwich modules. The concept offered a significant reduction in construction time, which was a great advantage for the customer and Copenhagen, where there is a massive shortage of student accommodation.

At CN3, we consider digital fabrication the most important component in streamlining and improving construction, even before it is built. To minimize the number of errors and increase productivity, Byldis therefore chose CN3 as partner for the construction of the building. Koen van Tartwijk from Byldis says about the collaboration:

“CN3 created consistency between the project partners through 3D models and their Vitus system, which ensured that design challenges were discovered before we got started, thus allowing us to avoid construction site errors.”

Based on our experience from, among others, UMEUS, we have developed a methodology for similar projects, where digital prefabrication can provide faster decision-making processes and more efficient construction processes with fewer errors.
